Beach Music Exhibit Coming in 2020
Thursday, October 31 2019

October 31, 2019

In a post shared earlier today on Facebook, the North Carolina Museum of History will be unvailing a Beach Music Exhibit in May of 2020 that will run through January 2021. It's looks to feature items from: The Embers, Fantastic Shakers, Catalinas, Chairmen of the Board and the Band of Oz. The exhibit will be called: “Beach Music: Making Waves in North Carolina” and will include "six thematic sections that explore the genre, delving into what Beach Music is all about, the major hit-makers in the scene, and how it became a part of our regional identity." As we learn more we will be sure to update our news feed.

Support Hugh
Wednesday, October 30 2019

As many have noticed, Hugh "Tuff" Blanton hasn't been performing with Cat5 including the video we posted earlier this month. Tuff was diagnosed with cancerous tumor in his liver. A GoFundMe account has been setup to help offset the cost of medical expenses and if you're able to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Tuff is a great person and we're so sorry to see him having to go through this. We've provided the GoFundMe information below.

In a post earlier tonight on the band's Facebook page they posted the following: "A Lot of people have been asking about the absence of Hugh "Tuff" Blanton our Bass Player. Take a look at the Go Fund Me Page created for him and help if you can. Our Brother needs your help if its nothing but sharing the page. Thank you for all you do and your support of this matter. - Much love to you from The Cat5 Band"

On the fundraising page it reads:
" Dear Cat5 Band Fans:

As many of you already know, Hugh “Tuff” Blanton has not been able to perform with the band lately due to health issues.
In October, Hugh was diagnosed with cancerous tumor in his liver. Surgery to remove the tumor is not an option. Instead, the treatment plan involves a 3 to 4 step radio embolization procedure. Radiation beads will be injected directly into the tumor to stop it from growing, to shrink it, and (hopefully) to destroy it. His doctors are confident in Hugh’s treatment plan and expect a positive outcome.

The medical costs associated with Hugh’s treatment are extensive. For this reason, we have set up a GoFundMe account to raise funds to help offset the financial burden to Hugh and his family resulting from his medical treatment. The Cat5 Band is asking our family of friends and fans to make monetary donations to support our much loved Hugh and his family in their time of need.
Your prayers and financial support will be greatly appreciated. God bless and thank you. We also ask that you give him and his family some privacy for just a bit so he can put all his energy towards getting healthy and getting back to doing what he loves.

Over $70,000 Raised Last Month
Sunday, October 27 2019

In October we launched an online Beach Music auction on our website that was hosted by the Cindy Hite Memorial Golf Tournament in Clarksville, Virginia. Dale Hite from the Lake Live Live Concert Series approached us about participating and of course we were all in. In addition to the online auction they also hosted a silent auction, golf tournament and concert afterwards with J.B. and the Get Down Browns on October 18th and 19th at the Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville, Virginia.

It was announced that proceeds for this event totaled over $70,000 for the weekend event and all going to the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association. This event was started by members of the Hite family to honor Cindy who passed from cancer in 2011. The Clarksville and Southside, Virginia residents have such giving hearts and they also happen to be tremendous Beach Music fans with their concert series growing year after year.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the event, all of the businesses and entertainers who donated items for the auctions and for the volunteers who gave their time. This is an annual event and we hope to be part of this great event in 2020.

Steve Hardy Retiring After 45 Years
Sunday, October 13 2019

**Logo property of Steve Hardy's Original Beach Party**

After forty-five years, the one and only Steve Hardy will tentatively retiring. He's been on the air since April of 1974 and he grew up "listening to groups like the Four Tops and the Tempations" according to his biography on Facebook. Steve's show, Steve Hardy's Original Beach Party "is the longest-running beach music radio show on the air." His show airs every Sunday from 5:00 - 10:00 PM on WNCT FM 107.9. Not only over the airwaves but over the years you could find Steve taking his show on the road to various venues and events throughout the East Coast.

During the Sunday, October 13, 2019 show, Steve, his son Britt and wife Hope announced Steve's retirement and released information on an upcoming CD, "Party For a Lifetime" that will feature a host of artists and bands performing some of Steve's favorite songs throughout the years. Britt credited Craig Woolard from the Embers in orchestrating the lineup. Craig also called in to talk about the project and once released, all proceeds from the sale of the CD's will go to Steve and the family. He mentioned how so many people were willing to donate their time as well as services to complete the album. One of the artists that will be included is Mark Black from the East Coast Party Band. His contribution is on the Jackie Wilson classic, "Whispers" (Gettin' Louder), which was also recorded and released by the Isley Brothers. Mark's version is sure to get chart action as he did a great job as always. The song is currently available for purchase on iTunes and all proceeds will also go to Steve and the Family. You can view the promo below!

Every year people look forward to Steve's annual Christmas event called the "Thanks for Listening Christmas Party" which hosts several bands, free food and a Christmas toy drive for the Toys for Tots organization. His wife Hope mentioned during the show on Sunday that the 2019 Christmas party would probably be Steve's last appearance at the event. Everyone is invited but you must have a ticket to attend. In lieu of the toy drive, they're accepting donations this year to help with medical expenses and Steve's retirement. Tickets will be distrubuted to the local sponsors around the first of November. The current lineup for the party includes: The Mighty Saints of Soul, Band of Oz, Steve Owens and Summertime, Main Event Band and other special guests. Tickets and sponsor information will be announced soon!

Keep the family in your prayers!  We're more than happy to offer our services in helping anyway possible here at Flip Flop Live.
